The structure of the Health and Social Services provision in Northern Ireland

In Northern Ireland, Health and Social Services are integrated and delivered jointly under the umbrella of Health and Personal Social Services (HPSS)

The Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety (DHSSPS)

The Department administers the business of:
Health and Personal Social Services
Public Health
Public Safety

Health and Social Services Boards

There are four health and social services boards (Northern, Southern, Eastern, Western) in Northern Ireland. They are responsible for assessing the needs of their respective populations and commissioning services to meet those needs.

Health and Social Services Trusts

The 19 HSS trusts are accountable directly to the DHSSPS and provide Health and Social Services as commissioned by the four HSS boards and local health and social care groups.

Health and Social Services Agencies

These provide regional services and are as follows:
Central Services Agency
Health Promotion Agency
Blood Transfusion Agency
Regional Medical Physics Agency
Guardian Ad Litem Agency
There is also a number of other specialised and professional bodies.
